Request Laser Cut – ECE Undergrads

Use the form below to submit a request for Laser Cuts.

A ticket will be automatically generated in our system, and a confirmation email will be sent (to the email address you provided) with the ticket number in the subject line.

Typically, the parts you request should be ready for pick up within five business days. Once ready, you will be notified via email.

Note: If you do not receive an email within 72 hours, please reply to the confirmation email or 3d@ece.ubc.ca for an update.

  • Nesting (process)

    Nesting (process)

Nesting refers to the method of organizing cutting patterns in order to minimize waste of raw materials. This technique is commonly used in the production of parts from flat sheet materials.

    Example 1: Simple rectangular nesting.

Example 2: Improved Nesting with rotated parts.

    Image 3

Example 3: Minimizing waste by mixing different parts.

    NOTE:

The minimum recommended gap between nested parts when using laser cutting technology varies based on the material being cut and the machine. Laser beam's high temperature can cause deformation in plastics or burning in wood due to the focused heat. It is generally advisable to maintain a minimum gap of 3-4 mm between each component and 5-10 mm from the edges of the material to mitigate the risk of deformation.
  • COST

    Black Polycarbonate 1.5mm (0.059") Clear Acrylic Sheet 3mm (0.118") Clear Acrylic Sheet 6mm (0.236")
Cost * Min Cost $30: Letter Size Cut
    (8.5 by 11 inches ~215.9 by 279.4 mm)
Min Cost $40: Letter Size Cut
    (8.5 by 11 inches ~215.9 by 279.4 mm)
Min Cost $50: Letter Size Cut
    (8.5 by 11 inches ~215.9 by 279.4 mm)

Note (1):  Cost is calculated using the total projection of the DXF in Letter size fractions.
Eg: If the total Width and Lenght of your DXF submssion takes 2 Letter size you will get charge 2X Min cost of the material selected.

  • High Density Polyethylene is a plastic that is easy to machine, but challenging to obtain clean laser cut edges. The material tends to absorb heat and fuse together, making it unsuitable for precision small details like gears. It is best to use this material if you intend to machine or post process it later. Acrylic, on the other hand, present a clean laser cut, but it is difficult to machine and highly brittle. However, it is possible to achieve more precise details as the edges do not melt or raise during the laser cutting.
