In ECE there are many forms of wires that are used for projects and they can range from simple solid wires to magnet wires that are useful for applications such as making the rotors of a motor. The 3 most common type of wires that are used in our project courses are
Solid Wires (where as the name implies, if you take away the insulation, you will only see a strand of wire. These tend to be more stiff)
Stranded Wires (these are wires that have multiple strands combined into one wire that is insulated. These tend to be more soft)
Magnet Wires (these wires are mainly used for wires of electromagnetic purposes)
WIRE SIZING
Wires sizes are determined by a system called the “AWG” or otherwise known as the American Wire Gauge. It is a standardized form of wire sizing, and it includes the density of the material, which are important considerations when calculating the impedances of wires. For the full table or
ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMICAL PRACTICES
Every year, after project courses are finished, box loads upon box loads of wires are often wasted or thrown out and each each year. Most of which are a result of wires being taken at excess and thrown away when it is found that the wires aren’t needed. Each spool of wire costs the department about $50-$100, all of which are resources that can be directed towards other much needed areas.
