Safety 101 | Safety 101 is a prerequisite course for access to undergraduate labs, facilities, and support from engineering services. If you haven’t already, please complete this course. This course is free and online on Canvas. Click here for more information. |
Safety | If you have questions about safety, or if you need to pickup your safety 101 sticker please email: safety@ece.ubc.ca |
Dedicated Facilities | Project labs: Teams requiring access to a project lab for the duration of the term can submit a request by emailing: engservices@ece.ubc.ca. CC: your Capstone project supervisor This lab has benches with the standard setup of test equipment (ESD-safe bench, DMM, oscilloscope, waveform generator, and DC power supplies). MCLD Meeting Rooms: 2005, 2007, 2009, 2017, 2035 After 5:00PM and all day on week ends all ECE students have access to MCLD ALCs: 3008, 3014, 3018 The ECE Makerspace (MCLD 1016) is available for supervised work to 491 students Monday through Thursday during regular work hours, by appointment only. On Fridays, priority is given to (ELEC/CPEN 491,492) and New Venture Design, as indicated on the Makerspace calendar posted here Click here for more information about the makerspace. |
Card access | If you find you do not have card access to the ALCs or the capstone meeting rooms please email: access@ece.ubc.ca |
Facility deficiencies | facilities@ece.ubc.ca |
Capstone Equipment Pool | The Capstone Equipment pool is a collection of items (e.g. A/V equipment, instrumentation, etc.) that are available for you to loan for your capstone project. For more information on what is available and to loan an item click here |
PCB Design and Assembly | Design: For PCB design, Altium is generally used. For Altium designer access click here for more information. Altium offers tutorials on how to create your own PCB. Click to here view their tutorials. If you need support with the design of your PCB, please consult your TA. Assembly: PCB Assembly includes taping out a PCB and if necessary assembly services. To see these resources click here. Note, you will need to login using your ECE credentials to see this page. If you choose to assemble your own PCB, you may book the Electronics Assembly. See the row below for more information. |
Electronics Assembly | Electronics Assembly is a bookable and supervised space comprised of different workstations to help with PCB board assembly, PCB reworking, and testing circuits with advanced instrumentation. For more information and to book a session, click here |
Makerspace | The Makerspace is a supervised workspace for hands-on projects, including woodworking, metalworking, and soldering. For more information start by clicking here |
Makerspace Safety Training | The Makerspace Safety training is comprised of an in-person orientation session and a free canvas course. Monthly orientation sessions are offered to students enrolled in Capstone (ELEC/CPEN 491, 492) and New Venture Design. These sessions require completion of the prerequisite Safety 101 training. Students must attend one of the monthly orientation sessions to complete their Makerspace Safety training on Canvas. For more information on available training, Details are posted here |
3D Printing | Capstone students this term have two options for 3D printing: 1) Printing at the makerspace. To 3D print at the makerspace, Capstone students can use a dedicated FDM (TInkerine Ditto Pro) printer, but must bring their own filament spool. This printer takes PLA material. To request access to this dedicated FDM printer, they must submit a ticket with design files using this form. 2) 3D printing service through Engineering Services staff. Capstone students can submit print requests through engineering services and a staff member will print your object for you using our supply of filament. Costs may apply. Fill out the form here to submit a request, and for more information about the cost model. For assistance or questions, please email 3d@ece.ubc.ca |
Fabricating Parts | Capstone students can inquire about additive and/or subtractive manufacturing: 1)Additive manufacturing Please see the 3D printing section row for more info. 2)Subtractive manufacturing Within the eHUB, there is the digital manufacturing room that houses a laser cutter and a mini waterjet. Please click here for more information about training and who to contact. Note: Costs may apply |
eWorkShop Services (CNC Machine Shop) | Access mechanical fabrication support for Capstone projects through the ECE Machine Shop. Explore available services like cutting, milling, turning, welding, and more at Shop Capabilities Request raw materials such as aluminum, steel, pipes, tubes, and wood, or submit detailed shop service requests with mechanical drawings. Capstone projects typically require financial authorization (e.g., speedchart/worktag). 🔨Use this Request Materials Form for unfinished materials (e.g.: wood plank) ⚙️Use this WorkShop Request Form for mechanical fabrication needs (e.g.: custom metal gears) |
Waste disposal | If your capstone project has leftover items or waste that you would like to dispose (e.g. batteries, 3D print material, metal, etc.) and you need assistance with their proper disposal, please email: facilities@ece.ubc.ca |
