Altera is a company that specialized in FPGA chip manufacturing. Usually the license and installation information is given to the student by the instructor (or posted on Connect). Specifically, Quartus and Model-sim(from MentorGraphics, but licensed via Altera) are the two software that are being used for digital design courses and projects. The software licenses are available via our network license server. Information about this can be found under "other help" and then "Network Access" page or by contacting the ECE Engineering Services CAD manager via the "ECE Engineering Services Page".

Altium is a PCB design and circuit simulation CAD tool that is widely used in industry. It can perform a variety of functions from schematic design of a circuit, simulating its behavior, drawing its PCB layout, to producing the required design files for PCB manufacturing. Usually the license and installation information is given to students by the course instructor. However, if you are not currently a student registered in a course that use Altium, and you need it for your project, for License/Install  information please contact the ECE Engineering Services CAD manager vis the "ECE Engineering Services webpage".

SolidWorks is a solid modeler software that is used primarily for 3D drawings, modelling and simulating their 3D movement. Our local license covers teaching/classroom use only. No research or commercial use is allowed. There are 2 packages available for student installations:

  • Student Design Kit (SDK) limited capability, for classroom use only
  • Student Engineering Kit (SEK), same as Network Licensed tools, for classroom use only
  • Network License: primarily installed on computer labs (for classroom use only)

The instructions on how to obtain and install/activate the kits are provided by the course instructors (or posted on the course pages). However, if you are not currently a student registered in a course that uses SolidWorks, for License information, please contact the ECE Engineering Services CAD manager via the "ECE Engineering Services Page".
