Disposal and Management of Waste

The safe disposal of waste and by-products of project fabrication processes is taken very seriously here at ECE. Not only for environmental reasons but for safety, waste must be disposed of properly.

For all used batteries, please bring them down to ECE STORES in MCLD 1032.

Chemicals and chemical waste must be stored safely in the lab, following all applicable Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) regulations, until disposal pickup details are confirmed.

Follow these steps for disposal:

  • Submit a hazardous waste pickup request through the Hazardous Waste Inventory System (HWIS).
  • Upon approval, package chemicals for transport according to TDG regulations, as specified in the HWIS approval instructions.
  • If a chemical cannot be disposed of via HWIS, contact the Technical Services Manager (MCLD 1018) to arrange third-party hazardous waste pickup.

Under no circumstances should chemicals be brought to ECE STORES or the Technical Services Manager’s office (MCLD 1018) unannounced.
These locations are not equipped for chemical storage.

For the disposal of UBC owned electronic equipment (such as old oscilloscopes, hard drives, computers), please contact Engineering Services.

The disposal of these waste materials is handled by the machinist. Please inquire by visiting the machine shop.

For leftover project waste such as IC's, electronic components and all materials that are not listed on this page, please contact the Engineering Services Contact for your course.

Please contact or visit the Technical Services Manager (MCLD 1018).
