Everyone working or studying in ECE must complete safety training before using our labs. Open the section that matches your role. If you are a graduate student who also works as a TA, you may need to complete both the graduate and TA training.
All enrolled ECE undergraduate students must complete safety training before being allowed to use any of our laboratories. This training is normally completed at the beginning of second year. If you have completed it in a prior year, you do not need to take it again. The online course contains four training modules.
Failure to complete the required safety training will result in the following:
- Temporary loss of access to ECE tools, machines and laboratories
- Refusal of ECE Engineering Services prototyping requests, typically required during project-based courses
- No consideration for Co-op positions within the ECE Engineering Services group
- Grade penalty of up to 5% (at the discretion of lab course instructors)
- Withholding of the Safety 101 sticker on your UBC ID card

As a graduate student you are considered an employee of the University, so you must abide by WorkSafe BC rules and regulations. If you are new to the department you must complete Safety One, along with any mandatory training assigned in your Workday inbox and any task-specific training your supervisor requires for your lab.
Enrol in Safety One
Safety One is the department orientation for new staff, faculty, and any student who did not complete their undergraduate degree at ECE UBC. It is hosted on UBC Canvas and is completed once.

Training for your own lab
The course is for general orientation. Your supervisor is responsible for training you on the specific equipment and hazards of the lab you work in. If you are asked to do something you have not been trained for, ask your supervisor for training.
If you are a teaching assistant in ECE, you must complete the Safety Orientation for Electrical and Computer Engineering – Teaching Assistants. This is done once and does not need to be repeated for the rest of your time as an ECE TA.
